In 2000, as China’s auto industry was just beginning to accelerate, William Li (Li Bin) founded Bitauto Holdings, a platform designed to bring car information to the country's internet users. The company started by providing internet content and marketing services, offering consumers data on car pricing, specifications, and reviews. This created a crucial online hub for a rapidly growing market of car buyers. A decade later, in November 2010, Bitauto reached a major milestone, listing on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker BITA. The IPO raised $127 million and signaled the company's leading position in China's online automotive landscape. Following its public offering, Bitauto continued to expand, securing strategic investments from major players like JD.com and Tencent, which further solidified its market presence. The company's journey took a significant turn in 2020. An investor group led by Tencent Holdings and Hammer Capital took Bitauto private in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $1.1 billion. This move, completed in November 2020, marked the end of Bitauto's time as a publicly traded entity on the NYSE and integrated it more deeply into the ecosystem of its powerful backers.
