Workpop, Inc. operated as a platform focused on improving the hiring process, particularly for hourly and service industry jobs. Founded in 2014 by Chris Ovitz and Reed Shaffner, the company was established to address the lack of effective recruitment technology for non-corporate roles, a gap the founders identified from their experiences at companies like Scopely and Zynga.
The company's core offering was an Applicant Hiring System designed to enhance the candidate experience. Unlike traditional applicant tracking systems that focused on screening, Workpop's platform was built to be an engaging tool for both job seekers and employers. It provided a web and mobile solution where candidates could create detailed profiles, supplement resumes with video introductions, and receive data-driven feedback on their applications. For employers, the platform automated sourcing, streamlined communication, and offered features like legally binding digital offer letters and a paperless onboarding system. The business primarily served sectors such as retail, restaurants, and hospitality, with clients including Jersey Mike's Subs, Sweetgreen, and The Peninsula Hotels.
Workpop secured $7.9 million in a Series A funding round in August 2014, following an initial seed investment, with Trinity Ventures leading the round. In September 2018, Cornerstone OnDemand, a cloud-based talent management software company, acquired Workpop. The acquisition was a strategic move for Cornerstone to bolster its recruiting suite, particularly for frontline and entry-level positions. The Workpop team and technology were integrated to help create a new product called Cornerstone Frontline. Following the acquisition, the Workpop job site announced it would shut down on December 31, 2020.
