Originally founded as AtTask in 2001 by Scott Johnson, Abe Knell, Jason Fletcher, and Nate Bowler, the company that would become Workfront was born from Johnson's idea for a software to better manage workflow and communication. The founders bootstrapped the initial venture, with some even taking out second mortgages on their homes to fund the company. After a complete platform rewrite released in 2006, the company began to attract venture capital, and in 2015, rebranded from AtTask to Workfront. A significant milestone was the acquisition by Adobe for $1.5 billion, which was announced in November 2020 and finalized in December 2020.
Now known as Adobe Workfront, the firm provides a cloud-based enterprise work management solution tailored for large businesses, particularly those with complex workflows in marketing and IT. Its business model is centered on selling software-as-a-service (SaaS) subscriptions, with revenue generated through tiered pricing plans named Select, Prime, and Ultimate, which cater to different organizational needs. This subscription model provides customers with access to a comprehensive platform for project management and collaboration.
Adobe Workfront's core offering is a centralized system designed to manage the entire work lifecycle, from planning and resource allocation to execution and reporting. Key features include project and portfolio management, resource scheduling, time tracking, document management, and tools for collaboration and approval processes. The platform distinguishes itself by offering robust workflow automation, native integrations with enterprise tools like Adobe Creative Cloud and Google Drive, and advanced security controls. It enables organizations to consolidate work requests, gain real-time visibility into project progress, and manage team capacity effectively. For marketing and creative teams, Workfront streamlines campaign execution and the management of creative assets. The addition of Workfront Fusion allows for the creation of custom workflows and automation of tasks by connecting disparate business systems.
