Tributes.com was established in 2008, with an official launch in the fall of that year led by Monster.com founder, Jeff Taylor. The company positioned itself as a central online destination for obituary news and memorial service information across the United States. Its primary offering was a comprehensive and accessible database containing over 100 million current and historical death records, with some dating back to the 1930s. The business operated by creating a large distribution network for obituaries, partnering with thousands of funeral homes and 140 broadcast stations. This strategy involved developing integrated software modules with funeral home management systems, such as SRS Computing, to automatically generate and publish customized obituary listings.

The platform served two main client groups: funeral homes, which it provided with a streamlined process for publishing obituaries, and the general public, who used the site to find funeral information, write tributes, and find community support. At its peak, the site attracted over 5 million unique monthly visitors. The business model focused on creating a unifying platform for obituary distribution, providing value to both industry partners and consumers seeking information. In April 2015, Tributes.com was acquired by Legacy.com, a larger competitor in the online obituary market. Following the acquisition, the Tributes.com platform and its extensive database were integrated into Legacy.com's operations, and the original Tributes.com website was discontinued.
