Eons.com was a social networking platform launched in July 2006 by Jeff Taylor, the founder of Monster.com. Taylor, a serial entrepreneur with a background that includes a degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and executive education from Harvard Business School, envisioned Eons as a digital community for baby boomers and individuals over the age of 40. His experience building Monster.com informed his belief that this demographic was an overlooked market in the burgeoning social media landscape.
The company's mission was to provide a space for users to connect around shared interests and life experiences, positioning itself as a "we"-focused platform in contrast to the "me"-centric nature of other social networks at the time. The platform offered various features, including groups based on passions and location, dating services, games, and discussions. Unique elements included a Longevity Calculator and a large, free national obituary center. Eons.com's business model was based on revenue from banner ads, referral marketing, and casual games.
The venture attracted significant financial backing from prominent venture capital firms, including General Catalyst Partners, Sequoia Capital, Charles River Ventures, Intel Capital, and Humana, Inc. In April 2011, after reaching over 800,000 registered users, Eons, along with its advertising network Eons BOOM Media, was acquired by Crew Media for an undisclosed sum. However, the site became inactive in May 2012 due to business issues with its service provider and has remained offline since.
