In 1996, the Flemish Government initiated a project to create a unified cable network, leading to the formation of Telenet. The founding idea was to leverage the existing extensive cable television infrastructure to offer high-speed internet and telephone services. This was a classic playbook move: take a utility and layer new technology on top of it. The company was founded by a mix of public and private entities, with the American company US West as a key initial partner. Telenet's journey took a significant turn in the early 2000s. After a period of building out its network and services, the company went public. In October 2005, Telenet completed its Initial Public Offering (IPO) on the Euronext Brussels exchange. This event provided the capital needed for further expansion and solidified its position in the market. Another pivotal moment came with its relationship with Liberty Global, a major international telecommunications and television company. Liberty Global steadily increased its stake in Telenet over the years, eventually becoming the majority shareholder. This backing provided Telenet with significant resources and international expertise. The company used this strength to acquire other businesses, including the Belgian activities of SFR in 2016 and mobile operator Base in 2015, transforming it from a cable provider into a fully-fledged quad-play operator offering internet, television, landline, and mobile telephony.
