StartTrack operates as a Russian crowdfinancing platform, established in 2013 with foundational support from the Internet Initiatives Development Fund (IIDF). The firm provides an infrastructure for investment deals, connecting private investors with small and medium-sized businesses seeking capital.
Launched with an initial investment exceeding 90 million rubles, the company facilitates alternative financing for businesses that might not turn to traditional banks or investment funds. It enables companies to raise funds from a broad base of private and institutional investors. The platform is managed by CEO Konstantin Shabalin. By late 2018, StartTrack had facilitated the investment of over 2.3 billion rubles into 76 Russian companies from its network of more than 6,800 accredited investors.
The platform's business model centers on earning a commission, which is paid after a company successfully receives investment funds. StartTrack supports several mechanisms for capital raising, including equity crowdfunding (краудинвестинг) and crowdlending (краудлендинг). This allows for transactions such as the sale of company shares, bonds, convertible loan agreements, and standard loan agreements. To support its ecosystem, the company offers analytical services to vet businesses and organizes educational events, courses, and conferences for both investors and entrepreneurs.
In April 2020, the platform temporarily suspended its crowdlending operations, with the CEO citing that the risks for private investors had started to outweigh the potential returns. By December 2020, StartTrack had relaunched with a new focus, transforming into an investment platform specializing in the acquisition of shares in Russian small and medium-sized enterprises. This pivot allows investors to become co-owners with the potential for dividends or future capital gains. The company also announced plans to introduce a secondary market for these shares.
