Founded in 1997, the company that would become SilverSky started its journey as a managed security services provider. The business was built to offer cloud-based security and compliance solutions to organizations with strict regulatory needs, like banks, credit unions, and healthcare companies. One of the early founders and leaders was Richard Dobrow, who established a company called Guarded Networks Inc., a precursor in the lineage of what SilverSky would become. The company underwent a significant transformation when it was acquired by the major defense and security firm BAE Systems in late 2014 for $232.5 million. This move was designed to bolster BAE's commercial cybersecurity offerings, integrating SilverSky’s cloud-based email and network security solutions into its Applied Intelligence division. At the time of the acquisition, SilverSky had roughly 400 employees and served over 5,000 customers. A pivotal second act occurred in November 2020, when a private investor group, which included original management members Richard Dobrow and Cary Conrad, bought the company back from BAE Systems. Dobrow returned to the helm as CEO. This management-led buyout marked a new chapter for SilverSky, refocusing its efforts on managed detection and response (MDR) services. The company continues to operate and innovate, recently securing a new funding round in April 2024 to expand its global market presence.
