Pentair's journey began in 1966, founded by five partners including Murray Harpole, who would later become the company's enduring figure. Initially, Pentair was established to manufacture research balloons, a niche market that soon proved unsustainable. By 1968, the company faced near bankruptcy, with only Harpole remaining from the original founders. His leadership was pivotal in steering Pentair towards new horizons.
Under Harpole's guidance, Pentair pivoted from its original focus and began acquiring companies in the water treatment and pump industries. This strategic shift laid the foundation for Pentair's future as a leader in water solutions. The company's first major acquisition was the acquisition of Porter-Cable, a power tool manufacturer, in 1981, which marked the beginning of its expansion through strategic acquisitions.
In 1995, Pentair made a significant move by acquiring General Signal Pump Group, which solidified its position in the water and fluid management sector. This acquisition was a turning point, allowing Pentair to focus more on water technologies, which would become its core business.
Over the years, Pentair continued to grow through acquisitions and innovations, eventually spinning off its electrical division in 2018 to focus solely on water solutions. Today, Pentair is a global leader in water treatment, committed to providing sustainable solutions that help people, businesses, and industries manage their water resources efficiently.
Pentair's story is one of resilience and transformation, driven by strategic pivots and a commitment to innovation in the face of challenges. From its humble beginnings in research balloons to becoming a key player in global water solutions, Pentair exemplifies the power of adaptability and vision in business.
