Macaw LLC, founded in Washington, D.C. in 2013 by Tom Giannattasio and Adam Christ, emerged to address a significant gap in the web design workflow. Giannattasio, tired of the disjointed process between visual design tools like Photoshop and code editors, began experimenting with a solution that could visually empower designers while automatically handling the task of writing clean HTML and CSS. This experimentation led to a proof of concept, and alongside co-founder Adam Christ, he spent a year developing the idea before launching a Kickstarter campaign. The campaign was a resounding success, raising $275,929 from 2,752 backers, far exceeding its initial $75,000 goal.
The company's core product, Macaw, was a desktop application marketed as a "code-savvy web design tool." It aimed to blend the intuitive, visual interface of an image editor with a powerful design-to-code engine named Alchemy. This engine was engineered to translate visual designs into semantic HTML and CSS, applying logic similar to a human developer. Macaw was built for web designers who wanted to work directly with the medium of the web without getting bogged down in manual coding. Its features included a fluid, responsive canvas for real-time mobile-first design, the ability to save and reuse components, and a style editor for managing sitewide changes efficiently. The software was designed to feel familiar to users of Adobe products, with similar hotkeys and a layer-based system that corresponded to web structures like divs and classes.
The business operated in the competitive web design and development tools market, positioning itself as a more sophisticated alternative to traditional WYSIWYG editors and a bridge between design and development. In January 2016, Macaw was acquired by InVision, a prominent product design and collaboration platform. The acquisition was an "acqui-hire," bringing the Macaw team into InVision to contribute to its broader product strategy. While InVision stated that existing Macaw users would retain access to the product, the standalone software is no longer available, and its website, macaw.co, is defunct. The team and technology were set to be integrated into InVision's offerings, marking the end of Macaw's journey as an independent entity.
