The company was founded in late 2014 by Charles Lavigne and Kevin Oke, both veterans of the video game industry with experience at companies like Electronic Arts, Sony, and Microsoft. Their background in creating engaging 3D content was pivotal to the company's direction. The initial inspiration came from a veterinarian friend who highlighted the challenges of learning anatomy from 2D textbooks, which led to the development of their first product, EasyAnatomy. This educational technology (edtech) software provides interactive 3D models of animal anatomy for veterinary students and institutions. EasyAnatomy gained significant traction, being adopted by schools in over 50 countries.

Pivoting from its initial focus on edtech, LlamaZOO applied its core technology to industrial sectors. The company developed a proprietary platform to create digital twins—virtual 1:1 scale replicas of physical assets that are updated with real-time data. This platform fuses disparate data sources, such as geospatial, engineering, and IIoT data, into a single, interactive 3D model. This service enables clients in industries like mining to visualize complex data for mine planning, operational efficiency, and stakeholder communication, ultimately reducing costs and improving safety. The business model centers on developing these sophisticated visualization solutions for large industrial enterprises and post-secondary institutions. Following the acquisition, the LlamaZOO team, including its co-founders, joined KPMG's Ignition hub to continue developing these technologies on a larger scale.
