Established in 1995 by Kazuhide Nakaniwa, who possesses three decades of experience in construction surveying, Kumonosu Corporation emerged from the necessity to aid in the recovery efforts following The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.
Initially focused on construction surveying, the company has strategically shifted its primary operations to the maintenance, preservation, and management of existing infrastructure. This pivot addresses the increasing global incidents related to aging structures. The company operates under the slogan, “Challenging to measure things that could not be measured,” reflecting its commitment to developing advanced monitoring solutions.
Kumonosu's core offering is a remote crack inspection and measurement system. This patented technology utilizes 3D laser scanners and telemetry to perform high-definition 3D measurements and structural inspections of roads, bridges, dams, and other large-scale structures. A key feature is the ability to remotely measure crack widths as small as 0.2-0.4mm from a distance of up to 100 meters. This capability eliminates the need for costly and disruptive scaffolding or elevated work platforms, allowing for safer and more efficient inspections. The system automatically processes the captured data into CAD drawings, significantly reducing the time and expense associated with traditional inspection work. The business model encompasses both providing these specialized surveying services with skilled engineers and selling its proprietary products, which have been exported to over 20 countries since 2008. The company serves a diverse client base across architecture, civil engineering, and cultural asset protection, both in Japan and internationally.
