Founded in 2006 by Amar Goel and Akshay Garg, Komli Media emerged as an advertising technology company with a strategic focus on the Asia Pacific region. Goel, a Harvard University graduate and serial entrepreneur who also founded PubMatic, brought extensive experience from his earlier venture, Chipshot.com, and roles at Microsoft and McKinsey & Co. The company was established when the digital advertising market in India was still in its infancy, representing a nascent opportunity.
Komli Media provided a comprehensive suite of digital marketing solutions for advertisers, agencies, and publishers across display, mobile, video, and social media. Its business model centered on leveraging programmatic buying and real-time bidding (RTB) to enhance the efficiency and transparency of ad campaigns. The company developed proprietary technology platforms, including ATOM, a real-time bidding platform, and ViziSense, an audience measurement and media planning tool that provided demographic data and insights into the browsing habits of Indian audiences. These tools allowed clients to target audiences more effectively, measure campaign impact, and optimize their return on investment. Revenue was generated by buying advertising slots in bulk and reselling them to advertisers, as well as offering managed services for campaign optimization.
Throughout its history, Komli Media achieved several significant milestones, including raising approximately $97 million over five funding rounds from prominent investors like Norwest Venture Partners, Nexus Venture Partners, and Helion Venture Partners. The company expanded its footprint across the Asia Pacific region through a series of acquisitions, including Admax Network and Aktiv Digital. In 2015, as part of a strategic shift to focus on technology and regional strengths, Komli Media sold its Southeast Asian operations to Axiata Group and its India business was merged with SVG Media. Following this merger, Komli India continued to operate as an independent unit within the SVG Media group, which aimed to become one of the largest digital marketing platforms in the region.
