Geouniq, established in 2014, is a company specializing in mobile location intelligence and data analytics. The concept for Geouniq originated from the PhD work of its creator, Antonino Famulari, which focused on technologies and business models for valuing collected data while respecting privacy. Famulari, who served as CEO, holds a Ph.D. in Information Technology from Télécom Paris and has a background in computer engineering, telecommunications, and business management. The project attracted co-founders, described as two entrepreneurs with previous successful exits, who provided initial support. The company was the first Italian startup to join the Station F incubator in Paris, participating in the HEC business school's acceleration program.
The firm's primary offering is a web-based platform and a privacy-first software development kit (SDK) that allows developers to integrate complex geolocation functions into mobile applications. This technology enables the collection and analysis of high-quality location data to understand consumer behavioral habits, such as travel patterns, consumption, and interests, derived from smartphone usage. The analyses are then sold to businesses across various sectors, including retail, real estate, banking, and insurance. The business model revolves around providing location analytics solutions that turn raw geospatial data into actionable market information.
In October 2019, the Italian martech company Jakala acquired a 25% stake in Geouniq, with plans to fully consolidate the company within three years to enhance its offerings in customer relationship management and location-based business intelligence. This partnership aimed to develop and launch new products in these segments. Subsequently, in December 2021, Geouniq was fully acquired by Cloud4Wi, a prominent company in location-based marketing solutions. The acquisition was intended to merge Cloud4Wi's expertise in analyzing customer behavior inside physical locations with Geouniq's technology for tracking behavior outside of them, thereby creating a more unified view of the physical and digital customer journey. Following the acquisition, Antonino Famulari transitioned to the role of Chief Business Development Officer and Board Member at Cloud4Wi.
