Flatheads is an India-based, direct-to-consumer (D2C) footwear brand established in 2018 by co-founders Ganesh Balakrishnan and Utkarsh Biradar. The company targets the urban, modern workforce, offering casual sneakers designed for all-day wear in India's tropical climate. The founding thesis was to create a comfortable and stylish alternative to formal work shoes, akin to a “casual Hush Puppies equivalent” for office-goers.

Ganesh Balakrishnan, an alumnus of IIT Bombay and IIM Bangalore, brought extensive experience in marketing and growth strategy from previous ventures, including co-founding the mobile payments app Momoe, which was later acquired by e-commerce platform ShopClues. This background in consumer marketing and managing merchant ecosystems informed Flatheads' growth strategy. Utkarsh Biradar, also an IIT Bombay graduate with a Master's in Design, handled the product design, sourcing, and supply chain, leveraging his experience from companies like Honeywell and his role as CEO at Momoe. The duo's prior entrepreneurial journey together at Momoe provided a foundation for their collaboration at Flatheads.

The business operates on a D2C model, primarily selling through its own website to maintain control over branding and customer relationships. Flatheads' core product proposition centers on creating lightweight, breathable, and comfortable sneakers, which they describe as "T-shirts for your feet". A key differentiator is its use of natural and sustainable materials, being one of the first brands in India to introduce shoes made from bamboo fibre yarn. They also utilize other innovative materials like banana fiber and linen. These materials provide moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating properties, making the footwear suitable for long hours of wear. The shoe construction features lightweight soles and insoles, and uppers made from ultralight, breathable knit fabric for enhanced comfort.

In July 2023, Flatheads was acquired by the youth fashion brand Styched in an all-equity transaction. This strategic acquisition allowed Styched to enter the footwear segment, with plans to integrate its on-demand production technology into Flatheads' operations. Following the acquisition, Flatheads continues to operate as a semi-premium flagship brand within the Styched collective, with its products sold on its own website and Styched's platform. This move provides Flatheads with operational backing and a path for international expansion, while enabling Styched to leverage Flatheads' technical expertise in footwear.
