Founded in April 2008 in Taipei, Taiwan, EZTABLE emerged from the founders' observation that restaurant reservations in Asia were predominantly made via telephone. Inspired by the success of OpenTable in the United States, co-founders Alex Chen, Brooky Yen, Jerry Yen, and Peter Hsieh launched the online reservation platform to digitize the process. Alex Chen's personal experiences with OpenTable in Los Angeles directly influenced the initial concept, which was then adapted for the local Taiwanese market.
EZTABLE operates an online platform and mobile apps that allow diners to search for restaurants by cuisine, location, and time, and then book a table. The company primarily targets the mid-to-high end restaurant segment. Its business model has evolved to generate revenue from multiple streams. Initially, it included subscription fees for restaurants and a charge for each diner seated through the service. A major revenue source became the sale of exclusive coupons and prepaid meal deals on the platform. Unlike OpenTable's model of charging for hardware and software upfront, EZTABLE provided a free app to restaurants and charged fees for premium functions, lowering the barrier to entry.
For restaurant clients, the service functions as more than just a booking utility; it is a customer relationship management (CRM) tool that provides analytical data on customer behavior. This data empowers restaurants to refine their service and marketing efforts. For consumers, the platform offers a convenient 24/7 reservation service, access to restaurant information and reviews, and exclusive discounts. The company has expanded its operations beyond Taiwan to include Hong Kong, Thailand, and Indonesia. Over its history, EZTABLE has secured significant funding, including a $1.5 million Series A in 2012, a $5 million Series B in 2015 led by MediaTek, and an $8.8 million Series C in 2016 led by Japanese reservation company Ikyu.com.
