Energate Inc., founded in 2004, operated from Ottawa, Canada, as a provider of demand response and home energy management solutions. The company's offerings were targeted at utilities and their consumers, providing tools to manage energy consumption.
The firm developed a range of products including software, wireless communications, gateways, smart thermostats, switches, and consumer energy displays. This suite of tools was designed to facilitate interactive energy management and demand response, enabling both utilities and end-users to control and shift energy usage, particularly from large appliances. A notable partnership was with WattTime, creating the HōlHōm smart thermostat which featured a "Clean Power Mode" to prioritize electricity from environmentally-friendly power plants.
Energate's business model focused on providing these technologies to utility partners to enhance their smart grid applications. The company secured $7.2 million in a Series B funding round on May 27, 2010, led by Cycle Capital Management with participation from the Ontario Capital Growth Corporation. This capital was intended to increase sales and support product development. In August 2017, Energate was acquired by Tantalus, a smart grid technology company. This acquisition aimed to expand Tantalus's smart grid application portfolio by integrating Energate's demand management capabilities. Following the acquisition, Energate was designated as an "acqui-hired" company and later noted as "Out of Business" as an independent entity.
