In the late 1980s, a group of Indonesian entrepreneurs including Prajogo Pangestu, Bambang Trihatmodjo, Peter F. Gontha, and Henry Pribadi, initiated a plan to build a petrochemical powerhouse in Cilegon, Indonesia. This led to the founding of PT Chandra Asri in 1989, with a vision to reduce the nation's reliance on imported petrochemical products. Around the same time, in 1984, PT Tri Polyta Indonesia was established to process raw materials into plastic products. A pivotal moment in the company's journey occurred in 2011 when PT Tri Polyta Indonesia Tbk and PT Chandra Asri merged to become PT Chandra Asri Petrochemical Tbk. This strategic consolidation created an integrated petrochemical giant in the region. The newly formed entity was listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange under the ticker TPIA. This merger was designed to create efficiencies, as Chandra Asri was a key supplier of raw materials to Tri Polyta. The company continued its growth trajectory through strategic partnerships. In 2011, SCG Chemicals, a subsidiary of Siam Cement Group, acquired a significant stake in the company. This was followed by a partnership with ThaiOil Public Company Limited in 2021, further solidifying its position in the Southeast Asian market. In early 2024, the company officially changed its name to PT Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk to reflect its business diversification into chemicals and infrastructure. More recently, in 2025, Chandra Asri, through a joint venture with Glencore, acquired Shell's refinery and petrochemical assets in Singapore, significantly expanding its production capacity and regional footprint.
