Buscapé stands as a pioneering Brazilian e-commerce platform, functioning as a comprehensive shopping assistant for consumers. The company's journey began in 1999, born from a practical need identified by university students Rodrigo Borges, Romero Rodrigues, Ronaldo Takahashi, and Mario Letelier. After struggling to find and compare prices for a printer online, the São Paulo-based students launched the platform with an initial investment of R$4,800 to aggregate product information and prices from various online retailers.
Initially, the business model centered on lead generation, where retailers would pay for clicks generated from the platform. This model was innovative at a time when retailers were hesitant to display their prices online. The platform's core service is a price comparison tool that allows users to view offers from hundreds of affiliated stores. Over the years, Buscapé has expanded its feature set significantly. It now includes a price history tool, which tracks the value of a product over time, and a price alert function that notifies users when a product reaches their desired price point. The platform also offers cashback programs and discount coupons to further incentivize users.
Buscapé's history is marked by significant financial milestones and structural changes. Twelve months into its operation, the company secured its first major investment, followed by a US$3 million round from Merrill Lynch and Unibanco, a notable achievement during the dot-com bubble burst. A major strategic move occurred in 2006 with the acquisition of its main competitor, Bondfaro, which led to the formation of the Buscapé Company. This aggressive growth strategy culminated in 2009 when South African media conglomerate Naspers acquired a 91% stake for US$342 million. Following the acquisition, all original founders eventually departed the company between 2009 and 2015. In 2019, Buscapé itself was acquired by its competitor Zoom, leading to the creation of Mosaico Tecnologia ao Consumidor. This new entity, which owns brands like Zoom, Buscapé, and Bondfaro, was later acquired by Banco PAN in 2021, integrating financial services with the e-commerce platform.
