Altaro Software, founded in 2009, is a developer of backup and recovery solutions tailored for small to mid-market businesses, IT resellers, and Managed Service Providers (MSPs). The company was established in Malta by David Vella, Simon Attard, Julian Pace Ross, and Stephen Chetcuti Bonavita, who pooled their personal savings to address a need for reliable backup software.
The company's core products provide backup and replication for virtual machine (VM) environments, specifically VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V. Its flagship solution, Altaro VM Backup, enables administrators to manage backups for both hypervisors from a single application. Altaro also offers solutions for backing up Microsoft 365 components, including mailboxes, OneDrive, and SharePoint. The business model caters to a channel-only sales approach, working through a global network of partners and MSPs. For MSPs, Altaro provides monthly subscription programs that allow them to offer robust backup services to their clients.
In January 2021, Altaro was acquired by the German-based Hornetsecurity Group, a European provider of cloud email security. This acquisition was a strategic move to transform Hornetsecurity into a broader international cloud security and compliance platform by integrating Altaro's backup solutions. Following the acquisition, Altaro's founders took on management roles within Hornetsecurity to ensure continuity and drive further growth. Prior to the acquisition, Altaro had grown to serve over 50,000 customers in more than 121 countries through a network of over 10,000 partners.
