ADman Media was established in Barcelona, Spain, in 2010 by co-founders Marcos Luengo, Victor Sala, and Josep Maria Tribó. The company began as a video supply-side platform (SSP) designed to help publishers optimize their ad inventory and maximize revenue, with a specific focus on Spanish-speaking markets in Europe and Latin America. The founders brought extensive experience to the venture; Luengo previously served as CEO at Lastminute.com, Sala held roles at Orange and Vueling, and Tribó had a background in digital media with Havas and Recoletos Grupo de Comunicación.
The firm operated by providing advertisers access to high-quality video inventory and offered publishers solutions to monetize their content through various native video formats. Its business model centered on programmatic advertising, enabling the efficient distribution of advertisers' video content to targeted audiences. The company primarily served publishers and advertisers in Spain and Latin America, which accounted for 55% and 45% of its revenue, respectively. In a significant milestone, Canadian ad-tech firm AcuityAds Holdings Inc. acquired ADman Media in 2018 for a deal valued at approximately €13.7 million. This acquisition was a strategic move for AcuityAds to enter the video supply market and expand its footprint into Europe and Latin America. Following the acquisition, ADman Media's founders continued to play key roles within the expanded organization, with Josep Tribó taking on a leadership position overseeing operations in the EU and LATAM.
In 2020, parent company AcuityAds launched illumin, a new journey-based advertising platform designed to unify planning, buying, and real-time intelligence for omnichannel campaigns. This platform enables marketers to visually map consumer journeys and deploy targeted ads across various channels, including social and email, from a single interface. The success and market adoption of the illumin platform led AcuityAds to rebrand the entire company to illumin in April 2023, reflecting a strategic shift towards journey advertising. The underlying technology leverages machine learning to analyze consumer behavior, providing marketers with insights to optimize campaigns for better performance and return on investment.
