Zeugma Systems Inc. was a telecommunications equipment supplier established in late 2003 and formally founded in 2004 by Andrew Harries and Siegfried Luft, who served as CEO and CTO, respectively. The venture-backed company, based in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, focused on developing solutions for the growing challenges of mobile data traffic. Over its lifetime, the firm successfully raised approximately $46.5 to $50 million in venture capital through multiple funding rounds, attracting investors such as BDC Capital, Granite Ventures, and Ventures West Capital.
The company's core business was the development and sale of equipment and applications for broadband service providers. Its target clients were global communications service providers struggling to manage the surge in mobile internet usage. Zeugma Systems generated revenue by selling its hardware and software solutions designed to enhance network intelligence and efficiency.
The flagship product was the Zeugma Services Node (ZSN), a service delivery router engineered to combine the functionalities of an edge router, a broadband remote access server (BRAS), and a deep packet inspection (DPI) device into a single platform. This allowed service providers to identify, monitor, and manage network traffic on a per-subscriber and per-service basis, offering a granular view of network behavior. The product suite also included applications like SmartMonitor for quality of experience monitoring, SmartVideo for enhanced video on demand, and SmartMeter for usage-based billing frameworks. The key value proposition was providing network operators with the tools to cut costs and improve service delivery for applications like video and VoIP.
In November 2010, Tellabs Inc. acquired substantially all of the assets of Zeugma Systems, including its intellectual property and a number of its employees. The acquisition led to the creation of a new research and development facility for Tellabs in Vancouver, aimed at bolstering its mobile solutions portfolio. Following the acquisition, Zeugma's CEO, Andrew Harries, departed from the company.
