Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) is a major Indian media and entertainment conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai. The company was founded by Subhash Chandra as Zee Telefilms Ltd. on December 15, 1991, and revolutionized the Indian television landscape by launching the country's first privately owned satellite channel, Zee TV, on October 2, 1992. Chandra, often called the 'Father of Indian Television', identified the potential of the entertainment sector and, after facing initial challenges, successfully established a media powerhouse. His son, Punit Goenka, currently leads the company as CEO, continuing the family's legacy in the media business.
ZEEL's business is structured around content and broadcasting, with revenue primarily generated from advertising and subscription fees. Advertising constitutes a significant portion of the company's income, while subscription revenue comes from direct-to-home (DTH) services and its digital platform. The company also earns from content syndication, licensing its vast library to other platforms, and through its film production and distribution arm. The business serves a global audience, with a presence in over 173 countries and a reach of more than 1.3 billion viewers.
The company's offerings span across multiple platforms. Its broadcast portfolio includes approximately 48 domestic and 41 international channels in various genres and languages, such as Zee TV, Zee Cinema, and a strong lineup of regional channels like Zee Marathi, Zee Telugu, and Zee Bangla. In 2008, the company ventured into film production and distribution with the launch of Zee Studios, which produces and markets films in several Indian languages. Acknowledging the shift to digital consumption, ZEEL launched its over-the-top (OTT) platform, ZEE5, in 2018. ZEE5 offers a massive library of over 100,000 hours of on-demand content, including original series, movies, and TV shows, alongside more than 90 live TV channels in 12 languages. The platform operates on a freemium model, providing both free ad-supported content and a premium subscription for uninterrupted access.
