Yandex.Taxi, a subsidiary of the Russian technology giant Yandex, launched its ride-hailing service in Moscow in 2011. The service was developed by the parent company, which is often referred to as the "Google of Russia" for its dominance in the country's search engine market. The initial concept was to create a mobile application that would aggregate various taxi services, providing users with a streamlined way to order a ride.
Operationally, Yandex.Taxi functions as a ride-hailing and food delivery platform, connecting users with drivers and couriers through its mobile application. The business model is based on charging a commission on the fares of the rides and deliveries completed through its platform. This model targets a broad consumer base in need of on-demand transportation and delivery services across numerous countries, primarily in Eastern Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and parts of Africa.
In 2018, Yandex.Taxi merged its operations in Russia and neighboring countries with Uber. This strategic move created a dominant player in the regional ride-hailing market. Following the merger, Yandex became the controlling shareholder of the new entity. The platform, known as Yandex Go in many markets, offers a super-app experience, integrating services beyond ride-hailing, such as food and grocery delivery, and car-sharing into a single application.
