Xiamen Yanzhiwu Bioengineering, which now operates as Xiamen Yan Palace Bird's Nest Industry Co., Ltd., is a prominent player in China's edible bird's nest industry. The company was established in 1997 by its founder, Huang Jian. Huang, a former mathematics teacher, transitioned into business in 1992 and identified an opportunity in the bird's nest market while working in Singapore. He observed that bird's nest products in China were primarily sold in pharmacies, which limited their accessibility. In response, he founded the company, initially named "Shuangdanma," to sell bird's nests through more accessible retail counters.
A significant milestone occurred in 2002 when the company introduced a "store + kitchen" model, offering freshly stewed bird's nest products and enabling same-day order, production, and consumption. A pivotal moment came in 2012 with the launch of "Wan Yan," a ready-to-eat bottled bird's nest product, which broadened the consumer base by offering a more convenient option. The company has demonstrated a commitment to setting industry standards; in 2014, Huang Jian led the drafting of the first industry standard for bird's nest quality grades. Xiamen Yanzhiwu went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on December 12, 2023.
The core business revolves around the research, development, production, and sale of high-quality bird's nest products. The product portfolio is diverse, including ready-to-eat bird's nests like the "Wan Yan" series, freshly stewed bird's nests, dry bird's nests, and other derivative products such as bird's nest pastries, chocolates, and beverages. The company serves a broad market through a multi-channel sales strategy. This includes a robust offline presence with hundreds of self-operated and distributor-run stores across numerous cities, as well as a strong online footprint on major e-commerce platforms like Tmall and JD.com. Revenue is generated through direct sales to consumers both online and offline, and through sales to a network of distributors.
