XyEnterprise operated as a specialized developer of standards-based component content management, automated XML publishing, and intelligent content delivery services. The company's origins trace back to Xyvision, a public company founded in the early 1980s that pioneered proprietary typesetting systems. In 1995, Xyvision transitioned into the privately held XyEnterprise. A significant milestone occurred in June 2009 when SDL, a global information management firm, acquired XyEnterprise for $14.7 million. At the time of this transaction, the Massachusetts-based XyEnterprise was generating an annual turnover of $9.9 million. Following the acquisition, Kevin Duffy, who served as the President and CEO of XyEnterprise, was appointed CEO of the newly formed business unit, SDL XySoft, which combined XyEnterprise with SDL's previous acquisition, Trisoft.
The company's business focused on providing sophisticated software solutions for creating, managing, and publishing large volumes of complex, structured content. Its clientele included organizations in sectors with demanding documentation requirements, such as military, aerospace, and other high-technology fields, as well as civilian federal agencies like the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Internal Revenue Service. The business model centered on the sale of software licenses, maintenance contracts, and professional services for implementation and support.
XyEnterprise's product suite was designed to handle the entire content lifecycle. Key offerings included Contenta, a component content management system for XML-based data, and XML Professional Publisher (XPP), an automated publishing engine for rendering XML and SGML content into high-quality formats like PDF and PostScript. Another core product was LiveContent (formerly ContentaView), an interactive delivery platform that allowed end-users to dynamically filter and view technical information. These tools enabled clients to reuse content components, manage translations efficiently, and deliver tailored documentation across multiple channels, supporting standards like DITA and S1000D.
