Writable is an educational technology company that provides a web-based platform for writing instruction, assessment, and practice for students in grades 3-12. Founded in 2016 by Andrew Goldman and Heidi Perry, the company aims to improve writing proficiency by providing tools for structured practice and feedback. The founding team consists of educators and technologists with prior experience building English Language Arts (ELA) tools.

The platform offers over 600 customizable assignments and prompts, integrates with learning management systems like Google Classroom, and allows teachers to provide timely, structured feedback. Students can engage in self-review and anonymous peer-review, while teachers can monitor progress and access actionable data to tailor instruction. Writable incorporates AI-powered features, including AI-suggested feedback and scoring, an originality checker, and tools to help teachers with lesson preparation and grading. In August 2018, Writable secured $3.2 million in a seed funding round led by Omidyar Technology Ventures, with participation from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH). A long-standing partnership with HMH, initiated in 2018, led to the integration of Writable's solution into HMH's core ELA curriculum. This collaboration culminated in HMH acquiring Writable on February 28, 2024. Following the acquisition, Writable's co-founder and CEO, Andrew Goldman, was appointed Executive Vice President of HMH Labs, a new division focused on emerging technologies like generative AI in education.
