WOW Tech Group emerged as a significant entity in the sexual wellness market following its formation in 2018. The company was created through the strategic merger of two prominent players: Germany's Womanizer Group Management GmbH and Canada's Standard Innovation® Corporation. This union brought together two companies that originated from the entrepreneurial efforts of founding couples.
The history of its core brands predates the merger. Standard Innovation® was established in Ottawa, Canada, by the husband-and-wife team Bruce and Melody Murison. Leveraging Bruce's background in high-tech, they launched the signature We-Vibe® couples vibrator in 2008. Separately, in Germany, inventor Michael Lenke and his wife Brigitte were motivated to address the orgasm gap, leading to the creation of the first Womanizer™ in 2014, which utilizes patented Pleasure Air™ technology for stimulation without direct contact. In 2017, Johannes Plettenberg, who has a background in industrial engineering, management, and corporate mergers & acquisitions, acquired the Womanizer brand with investors. He then orchestrated the 2018 merger with We-Vibe, forming WOW Tech Group and becoming its CEO.
A major milestone occurred in August 2021, when WOW Tech Group merged with the UK-based Lovehoney. This transaction created the Lovehoney Group, a consolidated entity valued at over $1 billion, becoming the world's largest sexual wellness company by revenue. The new group is led by Johannes Plettenberg and combines WOW Tech's brands—including We-Vibe, Womanizer, Arcwave, and ROMP—with Lovehoney's portfolio. The business operates on a multi-channel distribution model, selling products through thousands of B2B retailers and distributors in over 60 countries, as well as via its own direct-to-consumer e-commerce websites. The company focuses on designing, manufacturing, and marketing premium pleasure products, with manufacturing based in China and a global presence with offices in Berlin, Ottawa, and Hong Kong.
