World Energy Solutions, Inc. was a provider of energy management software and services, focusing on simplifying the energy procurement process for commercial, industrial, and governmental clients. The company was founded in 2001. Its core offering was the World Energy Exchange, an online auction platform where clients could negotiate and procure electricity, natural gas, and environmental commodities like renewable energy certificates from a competitive network of suppliers. Before its acquisition, the company had transacted over $45 billion on its platform.

The company's business model included two main segments: Energy Procurement and Energy Efficiency Services. It facilitated auctions that increased price transparency and competition, including for demand response programs which pay large consumers to reduce energy use during peak demand. In November 2014, it was announced that Boston-based EnerNOC, Inc., a provider of energy intelligence software (EIS), would acquire World Energy Solutions. The acquisition, valued at approximately $77 million including the assumption of debt, was finalized on January 5, 2015. The move was intended to integrate World Energy's procurement platform with EnerNOC's broader suite of energy management tools.

EnerNOC was co-founded in 2001 by Chairman and CEO Tim Healy and President David Brewster. They saw an opportunity to apply information technology to the energy sector, providing a suite of applications to act as an outsourced energy manager for clients. In June 2017, Italian multinational utility Enel, through its subsidiary Enel Green Power North America, announced its acquisition of EnerNOC for approximately $250 million. This transaction integrated EnerNOC's demand response and software capabilities into Enel's global energy services business, which now operates as Enel X.
