Wonik IPS is a South Korean company that manufactures and sells equipment for the production of semiconductors, displays, and solar cells. The company was originally established as Wonik Trading in 1981 by founder Lee Yong-han. It entered the semiconductor parts business in 1985 after acquiring Korea QME, a quartz manufacturer. The company's name changed multiple times, and it merged with other entities, officially launching as Wonik IPS in 2011 after a merger between IPS and Ato in December 2010. In April 2016, Wonik IPS was spun-off from Wonik Holdings and re-listed on the KOSDAQ stock exchange in May 2016.
The company's primary business involves developing and supplying equipment for crucial manufacturing processes, particularly thin-film deposition and etching. Its product portfolio includes Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD), Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), and dry etcher systems. These are used in the fabrication of 3D NAND flash memory, DRAM, and various display panels like LCD and OLED. Key clients include major semiconductor manufacturers like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, with sales to these companies accounting for a significant portion of revenue. The business model includes the sale of manufacturing equipment, which constitutes the majority of its revenue, as well as providing parts, maintenance, and technical services.
Significant milestones for Wonik IPS include the world's first successful mass production of ALD equipment in 1998, the development and mass production of CVD equipment in 2004, and entering the 10-nanometer process DRAM High-K market in 2018. The company is part of the Wonik Group, a conglomerate with assets totaling 5.31 trillion won, and is considered a core affiliate. Leadership has transitioned to the second generation, with the founder's son, Lee Gyu-min, serving as a Managing Director at Wonik IPS. As of early 2024, Taehyuk Ahn was appointed as the new CEO.
