Windsor Health Group, Inc. operated as a managed healthcare company focused on government-sponsored health plans. The firm was established in 2000, with its headquarters initially in Nashville, Tennessee, before opening executive offices in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2011. Its core business involved providing managed care services, primarily for the Medicare and Medicaid markets, serving the senior population.
The company's offerings included Medicare Advantage Health Plans and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D). These plans were available to members across several states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee. A key subsidiary, Windsor Health Plan, Inc., was originally founded in 1993 and formed the backbone of the group's Medicare operations. In 2003, the company expanded its service portfolio by launching the Windsor HomeCare Network. This network provided coordinated homecare services, such as home nursing, infusion, hospice, and medical equipment supply, to its own plan members as well as members of other health insurance plans.
Windsor Health Group underwent significant ownership changes throughout its history. In a transaction completed on January 1, 2011, the global reinsurance company Munich Re, through its subsidiary Munich Health North America, Inc., acquired Windsor Health Group for approximately US$ 131 million. Following this acquisition, Windsor Health Group, along with Sterling Life Insurance Company, operated under Munich Health, serving a combined total of over 200,000 members. The company's final major transition occurred at the end of 2013, when it was acquired by WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (now part of Centene Corporation). This acquisition marked WellCare's strategic expansion into the Medicare supplement insurance business and strengthened its Prescription Drug Plan segment.
