WeRice, an initiative by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), is a decision support system designed to aid rainfed rice farmers. Officially named the Weather-rice-nutrient integrated decision support system, its development began as part of the IRRI-Japan collaborative research project on Climate Change Adaptation in Rainfed Rice Areas (CCARA) from 2010-2015. The system addresses the challenges of low and unstable yields in rainfed rice cultivation, which are often caused by unpredictable rainfall, nutrient deficiencies, and pests—issues exacerbated by climate change.
The core of WeRice's service is to provide farmers with crucial, data-driven advice. It utilizes seasonal climate predictions to deliver vital weather information for the upcoming cropping season, including the anticipated start and end of the rainy season and rainfall distribution patterns. This enables the platform to guide farmers on optimal sowing and transplanting times, select appropriate rice varieties for their conditions, and apply fertilizers efficiently. The aim is to stabilize and improve the livelihoods of farmers facing climate uncertainty. WeRise is currently undergoing field tests and validation in Indonesia and the Philippines.
The business model is not based on direct revenue from farmers but is funded through international collaborations, specifically with the government of Japan through the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF). This backing allows the tool to be developed, validated, and disseminated across various geographical areas without direct cost to its user base, focusing on the public good and climate change adaptation in vulnerable agricultural communities. The project's goal is to enhance food security and build resilience against the impacts of a changing climate on one of the world's most critical staple crops.
