Wendeware AG operates as a developer of artificial intelligence-powered energy management systems, spun off from the Fraunhofer Institute for Techno- and Wirtschaftsmathematik (ITWM) in March 2019. The company was founded in Kaiserslautern, Germany, by Matthias Klein, Alexander Klauer, Wilhelm Krüger, and Jochen Marwede. This founding team combines deep technical knowledge from Fraunhofer's "Green by IT" research group, which has been developing energy solutions since 2009, with Krüger's startup experience and Marwede's three decades in the energy sector.
The firm's core business is the commercialization and continued development of technologies created at Fraunhofer ITWM. Its primary product is the Amperix® Energy Management System (EMS), designed to intelligently control and optimize energy flows across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. This vendor-agnostic system connects various energy components like solar PV systems, battery storage, heat pumps, and electric vehicle charging stations, regardless of the manufacturer. The system processes energy data in real-time, using AI-based predictive optimization to manage production, storage, and consumption efficiently. Clients range from private households to industrial facilities and microgrids. Revenue is generated through the sale of the Amperix® system and associated services.
The Amperix® EMS consists of hardware (Amperix® Energy Manager) and a software platform (myPowerGrid portal and app). The hardware, which can be based on robust solutions like Revolution Pi, is installed on-site to capture and optimize energy flows locally. The myPowerGrid portal provides users—including customers, technicians, and administrators—with detailed visualization of energy data, comprehensive analytics, long-term data storage, and export capabilities. This allows for the management of single properties or entire clusters of microgrids. In November 2022, Wendeware received a significant investment from TESVOLT, a manufacturer of energy storage solutions, to advance technological development and deepen their existing OEM partnership. A further partnership was established in June 2024 with Theben AG to address the home and small commercial energy management market.
