WellApps was a digital health company that developed mobile applications for patients with chronic illnesses to track their symptoms. The company's creation stemmed from the personal experience of its co-founder and CEO, Brett Shamosh, who has ulcerative colitis and saw a need for a tool to better monitor his condition for his physician. He founded the company in 2010 with Dr. Edward Shin and Paolo Teodorani.
The firm's core business involved providing symptom-tracking applications that collected patient data and compiled it into easy-to-read reports for doctors, aiming to optimize treatment and reduce active disease periods. Patients could use the apps to log symptoms, pain and stress levels, meals, and medication adherence to visualize correlations and understand their impact on their well-being. The initial application, GI Monitor, was developed for individuals with conditions like Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis. WellApps also planned to create similar applications for other chronic conditions such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia. The business model focused on the patient/consumer market, likely employing a freemium model where basic app features were free with potential charges for premium functionalities. Additionally, the company collected de-identified, anonymous data from its patient population to share with researchers, contributing to advancements in the treatment of chronic illnesses.
In March 2012, WellApps was acquired by Medivo (now Prognos Health), a company focused on streamlining the lab testing process. The acquisition was intended to provide Medivo with a quick entry into the mobile health space and integrate WellApps' symptom monitoring into its own platforms. Following the acquisition, Brett Shamosh joined Medivo as VP of Product Development and has since held leadership roles at other health tech companies, including Quartet Health and SchoolCare.
