WeFish is a comprehensive digital platform tailored for the sportfishing community, providing tools to enhance the entire fishing experience. The company was co-founded by CEO Alberto Manuel López Martínez, alongside Manuel García López and Daniel Agoiz Badia. The inspiration for the venture came after Alberto López experienced a shipwreck on September 10, 2016, where he lost all his handwritten fishing logs, revealing an unmet need for a digital solution. This personal setback motivated the creation of a secure platform for anglers to record and access their catch data. The company was established in September 2017.
The platform operates as a mobile application available for iOS and Android, serving a global user base with a significant presence in Spain, Latin America, and the United States. Its business model centers on creating a large, engaged user community. Monetization is pursued through a marketplace for new and used fishing equipment, personalized product offerings, and a premium 'PRO' subscription service. PRO users receive a higher percentage of cashback (5%) on in-app purchases, which can be used for future discounts, compared to 2% for free users. The app is free to download and use, encouraging widespread adoption.
WeFish offers a suite of features designed to cover the entire recreational fishing cycle. Users can create a detailed fishing diary, automatically logging meteorological data, solunar phases, tides, and water temperature for each catch, while keeping specific fishing spot locations private. A key component is 'FishGuru', a predictive tool that analyzes over 500,000 real catches logged in the app to forecast where and when to fish, suggesting effective techniques, baits, and even lure colors for specific species. Beyond its utility functions, WeFish is a social network where anglers can share experiences and learn from a global community. The platform incorporates gamification elements, such as challenges, rankings, and prize incentives, to drive user engagement and content creation.
Historically, the company has achieved notable milestones, including securing €150,000 in a 2020 funding round to invest in machine learning and expand into the U.S. market. It also won the SeedRocket Alicante competition in 2020. However, after more than six years of operation and reaching significant user traction, WeFish announced its closure in early 2023 due to an inability to secure a necessary funding round, which created insurmountable cash flow problems.
