Founded in 1998 by Bulgarian climbers Ivaylo Penchev and Metin Musov, Walltopia has evolved from a small operation in a garage into the world's largest manufacturer of artificial climbing walls by volume. The founders, who were friends from high school, channeled their passion for climbing into a business venture when they realized the low demand for climbing walls in their home country necessitated an international focus from the outset. Penchev, a serial entrepreneur who had studied theoretical physics, used funds from a previous business, a plastic bag manufacturing company, to kick-start Walltopia. Musov, who serves as Head of Production, focuses on leadership through problem-solving and manufacturing innovation.

The company's core business is the design, engineering, production, and installation of climbing structures and active entertainment products. Walltopia serves a global market, with projects in over 80 countries across six continents, catering to climbing gyms, amusement parks, shopping malls, schools, and hotels. Revenue is generated through the sale of these comprehensive, turnkey solutions, which include everything from initial design and architecture to long-term maintenance and inspection.

Initially focused exclusively on climbing walls, Walltopia expanded its portfolio in 2012 to include an "Active Entertainment" product line. This diversification was driven by a desire to transform physical activity into an accessible and entertaining experience for a broader audience. The active entertainment offerings now include interactive Fun Walls, Ropes Courses, artificial caving systems, Ninja Courses, and the Rollglider, an aerial ride that merges the sensations of a zipline and a rollercoaster. The company also offers the Adventure Hub, a concept that combines multiple attractions into a single large-scale entertainment facility. A significant milestone was the construction of the world's tallest indoor climbing wall (43 meters) in Abu Dhabi in 2019 and the tallest outdoor wall (85 meters) in Copenhagen in 2020. Walltopia manages its own production in four plants with over 400 employees, ensuring control over quality from steel fabrication to panel production.
