Wallbox N.V. is a global company specializing in electric vehicle (EV) charging and energy management solutions. Founded in Barcelona, Spain, in 2015 by Enric Asunción and Eduard Castañeda, the company designs, manufactures, and distributes smart charging systems for residential, semi-public, and public use in over 100 countries. The idea for the company originated at a friend's wedding, where the two engineers identified a gap in the market for intelligent, user-friendly home charging solutions, as major companies were focused on "dumb" public chargers. Asunción's prior experience as a Program Manager for Charging Installations at Tesla provided him with direct insight into the market's needs, while Castañeda brought expertise from his work in motorsports telemetry and at a robotics institute. Two days after their initial conversation, Asunción quit his job to start the company.
The company's business model centers on the sale of its hardware, which accounted for a significant portion of its revenue, supplemented by software and service offerings. Wallbox generates revenue through direct and retail sales, as well as through distributors, resellers, and installers. It serves a diverse client base, from individual EV owners to businesses, fleet operators, and municipalities, and has established partnerships with major automakers and utility companies. A key milestone was its public listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker WBX in October 2021, following a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC), Kensington Capital Acquisition Corp. II, which valued the company at an implied $1.5 billion. The company has since expanded its global presence with manufacturing facilities in Europe, North America, and Asia.
Wallbox offers a comprehensive portfolio of AC and DC charging hardware and energy management software. Its product lineup includes the compact 'Pulsar' family for home and shared-space charging, and the 'Commander 2' for business applications. A standout product is the 'Quasar 2', a bidirectional DC charger that allows vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) energy transfer, enabling an EV's battery to power a home or send energy back to the grid. For public charging, Wallbox developed the 'Supernova', a DC fast charger. The hardware is managed through the 'myWallbox' software platform, which allows users to monitor charging sessions, manage energy consumption, and control access via a mobile app. The company also offers the 'Electromaps' app for locating public charging points across Europe.
