Founded in 2017 by Anthony Gunawan, the company, which was previously known as Wakuliner, has rebranded to Waku. The inspiration for the business came from Gunawan's own frustrations with the fragmented food delivery landscape in Indonesia after returning from working in the IT sector in the United States. Leveraging his background in computer engineering and management, he launched the platform with an initial capital of IDR 2 billion.

The company's business model has pivoted from an initial consumer-focused culinary marketplace to a specialized B2B catering and canteen management service. Wakuliner, an affiliate of the prominent Indonesian F&B operator Boga Group and the venture capital firm AppWorks, generates revenue by providing a wide array of managed F&B services. Its offerings include daily meal provisions for employees, catering for events, snack boxes, rice boxes, buffets, coffee breaks, and canteen setup and management. The firm has successfully served over 570 clients, delivering 4.3 million meals since late 2019, which has resulted in revenue growth of more than 14 times during that period.

Waku's platform functions as an end-to-end solution, streamlining the complex process of corporate catering through an advanced system that manages and tracks orders across numerous kitchens. It partners with over 60 cloud kitchens to offer a selection of more than 15,000 menu items. In October 2022, the company secured US$1 million in a seed funding round led by Nasa Ventures and 11th Space Indonesia. This capital is intended to fuel product development and support both business and geographical expansion. The company has achieved significant recognition, including being named the official F&B partner for PSSI and the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
