Waggle.tv, founded in 2016 by Matthew Cavnar, established itself as a media company and social platform dedicated to pet and animal content. The company was incubated by Broadway Video Ventures, the digital media arm of the production company behind "Saturday Night Live". Cavnar, serving as CEO, led the company to address a perceived gap in the market for a dedicated online destination for passionate pet owners.
The company's formal launch in December 2016 followed a $2.3 million seed funding round. This investment was led by Raine Ventures and saw participation from notable venture capital firms such as Lowercase Capital, Brooklyn Bridge Ventures, and United Talent Agency. Waggle's strategy centered on publishing original pet-related video content across multiple digital channels, including its own app, a website, an e-newsletter called The Wag, and a significant Facebook presence. The platform was designed for a community of pet owners to create and share content, particularly live-streamed videos of their animals. Before its official launch, the platform had already aired over 1,000 hours of live pet content during its beta phase.
Waggle.tv's business model focused on becoming a global media brand within the multi-billion dollar pet industry by leveraging user-generated content alongside premium short videos featuring animal talent discovered on its platform. It also provided tools for pet and animal organizations to create and distribute their own content. This led to collaborations with prominent names like the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, America's Funniest Home Videos, and the San Francisco SPCA. In July 2020, Waggle Ventures Inc. was acquired by Nimble, a pet tech company specializing in pet monitoring devices and a cloud-based mobile app. Following the acquisition, Matthew Cavnar transitioned to an advisory role at Nimble to support the integration and continued mission.
