Voltalia SA is an international energy producer and service provider focused on renewable energy. Established in France in 2005 by Robert Dardanne, the company has since expanded its operations across more than 20 countries. A significant milestone in its history occurred in 2011 when CREADEV, an investment company controlled by the Mulliez family, became the majority shareholder of its holding company, Voltalia Investissement. This led to the appointment of Sébastien Clerc as CEO, who has since guided the company's growth. Clerc brought over 25 years of experience in the infrastructure and renewable energy sectors, including a decade in project financing at Crédit Lyonnais. Voltalia went public in July 2014, listing on the regulated market of Euronext Paris.
The company's business model is twofold, functioning as both an Independent Power Producer (IPP) and a service provider. As an IPP, Voltalia develops, constructs, owns, and operates its power plants, generating electricity from a diverse mix of sources including wind, solar, hydropower, biomass, and energy storage solutions. A primary revenue stream is the sale of this electricity, often secured through long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with governments and private corporate clients, which provides stable and predictable income. Voltalia has been a pioneer in the corporate PPA market, offering businesses long-term price visibility and a supply of green electricity. The second part of its business involves providing a comprehensive range of services to third-party clients. These services span the entire project lifecycle, including development, engineering, procurement, construction (EPC), as well as operations and maintenance (O&M), leveraging the in-house expertise gained from managing its own assets.
Voltalia serves a broad client base, from public utilities to large corporations seeking to decarbonize their energy consumption. By managing a diverse portfolio of renewable technologies, the company mitigates the intermittency of any single source and enhances energy supply reliability. Its integrated model creates synergies between its role as a power producer and a service provider, allowing it to offer comprehensive solutions. The company has demonstrated significant growth, having reached 2.6 GW of capacity in operation or under construction ahead of schedule and continues to expand its project pipeline globally. Notable acquisitions, such as Martifer Solar and Helexia, a specialist in solar rooftops, have further strengthened its capabilities and market presence. The company is also active in developing large-scale solar complexes, such as the 1.5 GW Arinos project in Brazil and the 140 MW Karavasta project in Albania, the largest in the Western Balkans.
