Established in 1996, Ilum-a-Lite Pty Ltd, trading as Vivid ilumalite, carved a niche in the energy-efficiency sector from its headquarters in Baulkham Hills, Sydney. The company was founded by Mark Rutherford, who also served as its CEO from late 2001. Ilum-a-Lite specialized in designing and developing technology-driven, energy-saving lighting solutions primarily for commercial, industrial, and government clients. Its business model centered on providing retrofit lighting systems that generated significant energy cost savings and reduced environmental impact, promising a rapid return on investment.
The company's product line featured retrofit solutions enabling quick and economical upgrades of existing lighting installations. Key products included the 'Light Eco' series, an energy controller for fluorescent lights that reduces voltage after start-up, and 'Save It Easy®', an adapter for fitting more efficient T5 fluorescent tubes into older T8 fixtures without needing to rewire. These products saw considerable success, with over 75,000 Light Eco units installed worldwide across seven continents by the early 2010s. Notable clients included the Sydney Opera House, Arnott's, and Currumbin RSL.
To facilitate adoption, Ilum-a-Lite developed financing partnerships, such as the Energy Smart Finance program with Low Carbon Australia, allowing clients to install its solutions with no upfront costs. The company expanded its reach by forming a joint venture in China in 2004 and partnering with venture capital firm Cleantech Ventures in 2011 to drive international growth. However, the company faced significant challenges, leading to the appointment of administrators in July 2019 to manage its affairs. Despite this, its Australian Business Number (ABN) remains active.
