Vista Energy, S.A.B. de C.V. is an independent oil and gas company focused on the exploration and production of unconventional resources in Latin America, primarily in the Vaca Muerta shale formation in Argentina. The company, headquartered in Mexico City, Mexico, was founded in 2017 by Chairman and CEO Miguel Galuccio, the former CEO of Argentina's state-owned energy company, YPF. Galuccio, a petroleum engineer with extensive international experience at companies like Schlumberger, is often called “the architect of Vaca Muerta” for his role in unlocking the formation's potential.
Vista launched with a $650 million IPO on the Mexican Stock Exchange in 2017, establishing it as the first publicly listed, independent energy company focused on Vaca Muerta. In 2018, it acquired significant assets, which provided immediate production and a platform to fund its main development projects. The company subsequently listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in July 2019. The management team is largely composed of former executives from YPF. The company's business model centers on the cost-efficient development of its extensive shale oil and gas inventory. Vista generates revenue by selling crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids (NGLs) to refineries and other customers, with a significant portion of its oil production destined for export markets. The company's profitability is tied to global oil prices and its ability to maintain low operating costs, which have been reduced significantly through operational efficiencies.
Vista's core operations are concentrated in the Neuquén Basin in Argentina, where it holds approximately 229,000 net acres in the Vaca Muerta formation, with an inventory of over 1,400 potential drilling locations. Its primary asset is the Bajada del Palo Oeste block. The company has demonstrated strong production growth, aiming to reach 150,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) by 2030. A key part of its strategy includes a commitment to sustainability, with goals to reduce its operational carbon footprint and invest in nature-based carbon removal projects. Vista has also made strategic acquisitions to increase its scale, such as purchasing a 50% stake in the La Amarga Chica block from Petronas.
