Vision RNG, established in 2021 and headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, is a developer and operator of infrastructure that converts landfill gas (LFG) into renewable natural gas (RNG). The company operates on a build-own-operate model, partnering with landfill owners to engineer and manage projects that capture and process LFG, which is composed of roughly 50% methane. This approach enables the transformation of harmful greenhouse gas emissions into a marketable energy source, creating new revenue streams for landfill owners.
The company was founded through a partnership with Vision Ridge Partners, which made an initial commitment of $100 million to support its formation and expansion. The founding leadership team includes CEO Bill Johnson, previously the CEO of ShalePro Energy Services with over 35 years in the energy infrastructure sector, and CFO Kevin Johnson. Their collective experience in natural gas and waste management is central to the company's strategy. The team has since expanded, bringing on seasoned professionals like COO Brian Martz, formerly of Republic Services where he led renewable energy business development, to further bolster its operational capabilities.
Vision RNG's business model focuses on developing LFG-to-RNG facilities at landfill sites, including mid-sized locations previously deemed not economically viable. The company manages the entire project lifecycle, from site identification and due diligence to design, construction, and ongoing operations. Revenue is generated by selling the processed RNG into the energy market. The resulting RNG is injected into natural gas pipelines for distribution and can be used for transportation fuel or by industrial customers to meet sustainability goals. This business strategy addresses both environmental concerns by capturing methane—a potent greenhouse gas—and economic opportunities by producing a clean energy alternative.
Since its inception, Vision RNG has rapidly grown its project portfolio. A notable milestone was the grand opening of Missouri's first LFG-to-RNG plant at the Meridian Waste Eagle Ridge Landfill in October 2023. The company has also secured agreements for numerous other projects across the U.S., including major facilities in Ohio, Alabama, Tennessee, and Nebraska. As of March 2024, Vision RNG had 15 projects in development expected to produce over 5.6 million MMBtu of RNG annually. The firm has also secured significant financing, including $207 million in project financing from HASI in October 2024 to advance the construction of two large-scale projects in Ohio.
