Verio Inc., established in 1996 by Darin Brannan and Justin Jaschke, operates as a global web hosting provider with its headquarters in Centennial, Colorado. The company was conceptualized by its founders along with venture capitalists from Norwest Venture Partners, Centennial Funds, and Telecom Partners, who syndicated to launch the business. Verio's initial strategy was a "rollup" model, which involved consolidating over 50 smaller Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and hosting companies across the U.S. and Europe. This aggressive acquisition strategy was fueled by substantial fundraising of $1.1 billion from its founders and several venture capital firms.
A significant milestone in Verio's history was its initial public offering on the NASDAQ under the ticker VRIO, which valued the company at over $1 billion. Shortly after going public, in 2000, Verio was acquired by the Japanese telecommunications giant Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Communications for approximately $5.5 billion in an all-cash deal. Following the acquisition, Verio continued to operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT, leveraging NTT's global Tier-1 IP network and data centers. Over the years, Verio underwent several organizational changes. At the end of 2005, its backbone network and some dedicated hosting centers were moved to NTT America, while Verio retained the web hosting business. In April 2015, Verio Inc. was merged into its parent company, NTT America, to improve operational efficiency and strengthen cloud services for enterprise customers. Subsequently, in May 2015, the Verio Shared SMB hosting division was sold to The Endurance International Group (now Newfold Digital Holdings Group), which continues to provide services under the Verio brand name.
The company's business model focuses on providing online business solutions for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) worldwide. Its revenue is generated through the sale of a wide array of web hosting and online services. The product suite includes shared web hosting, virtual private servers (VPS), domain name registration, and business-class email services. Verio also offers tools for website creation and management, e-commerce solutions that facilitate online stores, and marketing services to help clients increase their website traffic through search engine optimization. The VPS offerings, for instance, provide customers with a UNIX-based virtual machine, delivering guaranteed resources like server space, processing power, and memory in a secure, partitioned environment.
