Vanetta Food is a food-tech startup established in 2023 by co-founders Águeda Ubeira and Manuel Vila. The company operates the first plant-based meat factory in Galicia, Spain, focusing on creating sustainable, high-protein vegan alternatives to traditional Spanish dishes.
The founders' journey into the plant-based sector began during the COVID-19 pandemic with a food truck, which served as a market study on the viability of plant-based products in Galicia. After opening a plant-based restaurant, they identified a market gap for traditional meal alternatives beyond the common burgers and nuggets. This insight led to the creation of Vanetta Food. Ubeira has a background of over 10 years in the plant-based agri-food sector, while Vila has extensive experience in the retail and HORECA (Hotel/Restaurant/Café) industries.
Vanetta Food develops and commercializes plant-based products that mimic the taste and texture of traditional meat preparations, such as "Soja estilo zorza gallega" (Galician-style soy mince), "Seitán sabor lomo adobado" (marinated loin-flavored seitan), and various plant-based versions of cachopo, milanesa, and croquettes. The products are designed for quick preparation, typically ready in about five minutes. The company targets a diverse consumer base, including vegans, vegetarians, and households looking to reduce meat consumption. Its business model is primarily B2B2C, supplying both retail stores and the restaurant sector.
In June 2024, the startup successfully closed a €400,000 funding round to support its national expansion in Spain. This funding consisted of €200,000 from business angels, a €150,000 pre-approved loan from ENISA, and €50,000 in grants from the Xunta de Galicia. The company has also initiated its international expansion, entering the French market in June 2025 with plans to expand into Portugal and the United Kingdom.
