uTip operated as a French crowdfunding platform tailored for the creator economy, offering financial support tools to digital content producers.
The company was established in Paris in early 2017 by co-founders Adrien Mennillo, Stanislas Mako, and Thomas Domenjoz. Mennillo's entrepreneurial journey began in 2011 when he left a career in trading to launch his first startup in digital advertising. After that venture concluded, he returned to banking and strategy consulting. A significant life event in 2016 prompted him to leave his consulting career, learn to code, and develop the concept for uTip. Convinced by the project's initial metrics, he assembled a team to formally launch the company.
uTip's business model centered on providing content creators with a platform to monetize their work and engage with their communities. The service aggregated a creator's content from various social media channels, such as YouTube, Twitch, and Instagram, into a single feed for their supporters. Monetization was facilitated through direct donations and the sale of merchandise. Initially, the platform gained attention for a feature that allowed fans to generate revenue for creators by watching advertisements, a method that was later discontinued in July 2020.
The firm demonstrated early traction, securing a seed round of €500,000 in March 2018. This was followed by a subsequent funding round of €1 million in September 2019, by which time the platform had attracted 350,000 registered users, including 6,500 creators. Despite its growth, uTip ceased operations on April 4, 2023. The closure was precipitated by the termination of its contract with its payment processor, Mangopay, which led to the company being placed in judicial liquidation.
