Urban Tailor, operating under the legal entity Vestido E-tailoring Services Private Limited, was an online platform providing on-demand tailoring services for women. Founded in Bengaluru, India, in March 2015 by Ashish Singhal, Vasudevan Thrikkazhippurath, and Lavanya Venkatraman, the company aimed to professionalize the fragmented local tailoring market. The founding team brought a blend of entrepreneurial, fashion, and technology experience. Vasudevan Thrikkazhippurath, the CEO, was a serial entrepreneur and previously headed marketing and product development at Simplilearn. Lavanya Venkatraman is a graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology and the London College of Fashion, with prior experience in marketing at Myntra. Ashish Singhal, an alumnus of Netaji Subhash Institute of Technology, was previously a core member of Amazon's tech team.
The business targeted women seeking custom-stitched or altered ethnic wear, addressing common issues like unreliable fits and inconsistent delivery times from local tailors. Its business model functioned as an on-demand marketplace. Clients could go online to select styles and patterns for garments such as salwar kameez, kurtas, or blouses. The platform offered customization options, allowing users to either replicate a measurement garment, upload their own design, or create a new one using the online tools. A key service feature was the free at-home pickup of the customer's fabric along with a perfectly fitting garment to be used for measurements. After confirming the specifics, the company managed the stitching process and quality control, promising delivery of the finished product within 10 days. It also offered free alterations after delivery to ensure customer satisfaction. Revenue was generated by charging a commission fee to the tailors on its platform.
Urban Tailor secured an initial angel funding round from a group of former Myntra executives in July 2015. This was followed by a seed round in July 2016, led by Unitus Seed Fund and including participation from B.S. Nagesh, the founder of TRRAIN. The funds were intended for scaling operations in Bangalore and expanding to other cities. Despite its efforts to standardize a traditionally unstructured service, the company is now listed as deadpooled.
