Universal Carbon Registry (UCR), registered as Universal Co2 Emission And Offset Registry Pvt Ltd in India, operates a platform for mining and registering voluntary carbon credits. The company aims to make carbon credit markets more efficient, accessible, and cheaper, particularly for smaller green project owners who have been traditionally underserved. UCR’s protocol is designed to be simple, fast, and scalable for a wide range of green projects that reduce or avoid GHG emissions.
The company was co-founded by Vihar Pancholi (CEO) and Kishore Butani (CTO). Pancholi has over two decades of experience in renewable energy project installation, including waste-to-energy and biomethanation projects. Butani brings more than 20 years of experience in carbon trading within the Indian voluntary carbon markets. The management team also includes Atul Kumar Mishra as M.D., who has four decades of experience in project management in the power and infrastructure sectors.
UCR's business model centers on charging a one-time project registration fee and an issuance fee of 3.75% to 4.5% of the total carbon credits issued. This fee is automatically deducted in the form of credits, eliminating cash exchange and speeding up the process. The registry does not charge for opening or maintaining accounts. UCR issues its own carbon offset units (CoUs) and in 2022, it introduced a "Burn & Tokenize" function, allowing for the creation of carbon NFTs on the blockchain from unretired credits, enhancing transparency and traceability in the decentralized finance space. The platform is open to projects globally, excluding Annex 1 countries, with a special focus on projects in India, Africa, and Asia.
