Unity Robotics emerged as a spinout from the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA), a prominent German research organization. The company secured a seven-digit seed funding round in December 2017 to facilitate its transition from a key research project into the private sector. This initial financing was provided by a consortium including Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), and the investment arm of consultancy Staufen, Staufen-Digital, among others. The managing director is Ulrich Reiser, whose work on the Care-O-bot 4 robotic platform formed the basis for the company's core technology.

The firm develops smart assistant robots designed to operate autonomously in various service environments. These robots are engineered to interact with users intuitively, providing information and assistance while also handling transport and monitoring tasks. The business model is centered on the production and sale of these robotic platforms. The initial market focus upon launch was the retail sector, with a strategy to subsequently expand into other industries such as logistics, airports, hotels, healthcare facilities, and museums. The primary product is the Care-O-bot 4, a modular service robot designed for direct human interaction and support in commercial and public spaces.
