In 1993, a software company named Unicon was founded in Karlsruhe, Germany. For decades, it operated with a clear focus: developing a lean, Linux-based operating system called eLux. The goal was to provide a secure and manageable solution for enterprises to access virtual desktops and cloud-based applications. Essentially, Unicon allowed companies to turn various endpoint devices, like PCs and laptops, into a consistent and secure infrastructure. Their software, including the management platform Scout, gained significant traction, eventually being deployed on over 2.5 million endpoints in more than 65 countries. The company's journey took a significant turn in January 2025 when it was acquired by Citrix, a major player in virtualization and a business unit of Cloud Software Group. The acquisition wasn't a random event; the two companies had a technology partnership dating back to 2001. The move was strategic for Citrix, aiming to bolster its endpoint security for customers using its virtual app and desktop platforms. By integrating Unicon's eLux operating system and Scout management tools, Citrix could offer a more comprehensive, end-to-end solution. This allowed clients to enhance security and extend the life of their existing hardware without needing to purchase additional software, a compelling proposition as major operating systems like Windows 10 approached their end-of-support dates.
